Symposium on health sciences VIRAL-INDUCED CANCERS IN HUMANS
Oncoviruses are responsible for at least 12% of human cancers worldwide. These include viruses such as human papilloma virus (HPV), hepatitis B and C viruses (HBV and HCV), and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). For instance, cervical cancer caused by HPV is the fourth most common cancer in women, while HCV-driven liver cancer is the fifth most common cancer in men, and ninth in women (http://gco.iarc.fr/today/home).
Considering the prevalence of viral-associated cancers in our society and their major impact on public health, the symposium on “Viral-Induced Cancers in Humans” aims to inform and raise awareness of the general audience about the interplay between cancer and human viruses. It also aims at creating a space for debates between the public and experts in the field.
The symposium will count with the participation of:
- Pedro Romero, co-director, Department of Fundamental Oncology, Faculty of Biology and Medicine, University of Lausanne.
- Denise Nardelli-Haefliger, head of research, group of immunotherapy for urogenital cancers at Department of Urology, CHUV
- Darius Morapdur, head of the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Department at CHUV and
- Nubia Muñoz, expert in epidemiology and independent consultant, recognized academic and researcher who has performed groundbreaking work in the fields of oncology and epidemiology with the IARC and WHO.
The speakers will discuss the implications of their research and share their point of view about the latest clinical advances in prevention and treatment of virus-associated cancers.
